For the fourth consecutive year, the Budapest-based NATO MILMED COE in cooperation with the French Forces Epidemiology and Public Health Centre (CESPA) in Marseille, proposes a course dedicated to medical personnel: the NATO Deployment Health Surveillance Course - Level 1. As in previous years, this course aims to enhance NATO force protection skills against the threat of infectious diseases and bioterrorist attacks.

This year, 18 physicians, nurses and senior NCO`s from 14 nations (Armenia, Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Pakistan, Romania, Republic of Macedonia, Tunisia and the United States) attended the course. They acquired necessary knowledge to wider understand the importance of health surveillance in NATO operations as part of military medical support and to become active actor in its implementation and development.

The participants should become familiar with the existing health surveillance system such as EpiNATO-2, developed by Deployment Health Surveillance Capability (DHSC), with the mission to set up Health Surveillance for all NATO troops deployed in operation. This 5-day course is divided in different theoretical and interactive parts. During the first two days, students become familiar with the structure and functioning of Deployment Health Surveillance and health surveillance system such as EpiNATO-2. After this theoretical introduction participants have the opportunity to implement theory into practice supported by simulation workshops.

This course meets NATO's requirements in the field of military medicine training, i.e. in this matter how to enhance Force Health Protection measures, role 1 to 3 medical treatment facilities participation to preventive medicine, health surveillance, reporting, investigation and management of outbreaks.
