I-MED Course at Bundeswehr Medical Academy, Munich

The Bundeswehr Institute of Radiobiology of the Bundeswehr Medical Academy is the competence centre of the Bundeswehr Medical Service for research, development, training and medical CBRN-protection. Through international cooperation with civilian and military educational and research institutions, it expresses the institution’s high quality of standards.

The I-MED Course was conducted for NATO and organized by the US Department of Energy / National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) in close cooperation with the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE). Radiation Emergency Assistance Centre/Training Site (REAC/TS) Subject Matter Experts conducted the I-MED course, including a medical doctor, a trauma nurse, and a health physicist. REAC/TS is a DOE/NNSA asset and a world-class leader in emergency medical response to radiological/nuclear incidents. Its home location is the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Tennessee (USA).

The training audience in Munich consisted of 16 participants, coming from Germany, Austria, Slovenia and The Netherlands (The Netherlands will host an I-MED course in 2024 at their Central Military Hospital, located in Utrecht). Training included lectures, demonstrations and exercises, and hands-on activities that focused on treating patients from radiation injuries caused by exposure and/or contamination from radioactive materials.

The next iteration of the I-Med course will be from 3-7 June 2024 in Utrecht, hosted by The Netherlands. For more information and registration, please contact NATO MILMED COE Training Branch LTC Jos Schepers (train.eval@coemed.org) or Mr. Andrae Brooks (DOE/NNSA) at andrae.brooks@nnsa.doe.gov.
