NATO Medical Evaluation

From 22-26 July, NATO Medical Evaluations of civil emergency medical services, such as: Emergency Departments, SMURD ground and air Ambulances, and the County Public Ambulance Services in Targu Mures and Piatra Neamt were conducted by a team of certified NATO Medical Evaluators under the lead of LTC (ret) Oscar Meijboom from NATO Centre of Exellence for Military Medicin (MILMED COE) in Budapest.

Throughout 2023, medical specialists from units under the operational coordination of the Department for Emergency Situations within the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, together with military personnel of the Ministry of National Defense, completed the NATO Medical Evaluation (MEDEVAL) Course, in Targu Mures and Bucarest. The courses were organized by NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine, at the request of the Romanian Department for Emergency Situations. Medical evaluation against NATO requirements and Romanian rules, regulations and laws will assist in the pursue to develop medical intervention forces capable to operate in accordance with NATO standards and procedures.

6 newly certified NATO Medical Evaluators, alongside French, Romanian and Dutch military NATO Medical evaluation experts, conducted the evaluations. Military and civilian specialists used the NATO Medical Evaluation process in order to identify any risks to the medical support system not meeting the agreed standards. The evaluation reports will be written as a risk analysis and will mention how to mitigate such risks, before or during a potential deployment, In order to achieve an acceptable standard of medical care and providing the best medical practice.

This was the first time that a NATO Medical evaluation of Civilian medical organisations was conducted. The whole process is a joint effort from MILMEDCOE and DSU. In order to inforce this Civilian Military collaboration, focused on enhancing medical performance, the two organisations recently signed a Letter of Intent.
