NATO MILMED COE at the 2026 COE Marketplace Event

The NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence community once again gathered at NATO Headquarters between 12–13 May 2026 for the annual NATO COE Marketplace, an event that has, over recent years, evolved into one of the Alliance’s most important professional platforms for innovation, transformation, and capability development. The primary purpose of the event is to provide a direct forum for dialogue between NATO Commands, national delegations, senior decision-makers, and the various NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence. Throughout the two-day programme, participating COEs presented their ongoing projects, innovative solutions, doctrinal developments, training capabilities, and their broader contribution to the operational effectiveness of the Alliance.

The NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE) participated prominently in this year’s event, with the organisation’s exhibition stand focusing primarily on two key capabilities: the Near Real Time Surveillance (NRTS) system and the Centre’s rapidly developing Virtual Reality (VR)-based medical training capability. Together, these two focus areas reflected a broader strategic message — namely that the future of military medicine increasingly lies at the intersection of operational healthcare expertise, digital transformation, immersive technologies, and data-driven decision support.

Particular interest was generated by the NRTS system, which attracted significant attention from representatives of multiple NATO entities and national delegations. The system’s ability to provide near real-time epidemiological and health situational awareness prompted several in-depth professional discussions regarding its potential application within future operational environments. Visitors demonstrated considerable interest in how such a capability could support operational medical planning, early warning mechanisms, force health protection, and strategic decision-making during multidimensional military operations.

Alongside the surveillance capability, the NATO MILMED COE’s Virtual Reality training solutions also received substantial professional attention. The stand showcased how immersive VR technologies are increasingly moving beyond experimental demonstration and are gradually becoming operationally relevant educational tools within military medicine. Demonstrations related to Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), mass casualty management, and complex decision-making scenarios illustrated the growing potential of immersive simulation-based training to enhance realism, repeatability, scalability, and cognitive preparedness within military healthcare education.

The NATO MILMED COE stand was visited by several distinguished NATO leaders, senior subject matter experts, and representatives from Allied nations. Numerous engaging and thought-provoking professional discussions emerged throughout the event, extending far beyond simple technology demonstrations. Key themes included the future interoperability of military medical systems, digital transformation within military healthcare, the integration of AI-supported educational tools, and the modernisation of operational medical training methodologies.

Perhaps the most important outcome of the event, however, was not solely the presentation of technological capabilities, but rather the establishment and strengthening of professional relationships and collaborative opportunities. One of the unique strengths of the NATO COE Marketplace lies in its ability to create a direct and informal environment for strategic dialogue between NATO organisations, Centres of Excellence, capability developers, and operational stakeholders. In this regard, NATO MILMED COE’s participation represented not only a highly visible professional presence, but also an important opportunity for future cooperation, innovation partnerships, and multinational capability development initiatives.

The 2026 NATO COE Marketplace once again demonstrated that there is a growing demand within the Alliance for innovative, interoperable, and digitally enabled medical solutions. The capabilities presented by NATO MILMED COE clearly reflected the direction in which modern military medicine is evolving: towards data-driven systems, immersive training environments, AI-supported educational methodologies, and rapidly adaptable operational healthcare solutions.
